D-DAY 80TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIONS – Cowes Town Council will be hosting a beacon lighting service to commemorate the D-Day 80th Anniversary on The Parade on the evening of Thursday 6 June from 7.30pm (programme HERE).
This year’s Picnic in the Park at Northwood House and Park is being held on Sunday 9 June, 12 Noon – 5.30pm, to conicide with the D-Day 80th anniversary weekend. More details on the poster HERE. This is a free community event with live music and family entertainment. Bring your picnics, family and friends – all are welcome to attend.

MEDINA ROAD PUBLIC CONVENIENCES – We apologise for the delay in the refurbishment of these facilities. There is safety commissioning still pending for the powered door on the Accessible facility.
The Ladies and Gents facilities are complete and have reopened.
There are baby changing units in all three facilities. The Ladies and Gents facilities also have new ambulant disabled cubicles. We hope residents and visitors enjoy the refurbished facilities.

CELEBRATING COMMONWEALTH DAY 2024 – In the 75th year of the Commonwealth of Nations, Cowes Town Council is celebrating Commonwealth Day today. The Deputy Mayor Cllr Stuart Ellis read the Affirmation at Francki Place, Cowes, accompanied by Cllrs Sanders and Walters and Town Clerk, Claudine Russell, followed by the raising of the Commonwealth Flag.
#CommonwealthDay is an annual celebration observed by people across the 56 member countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.

COWES WELCOMES IN THE CHRISTMAS SEASON – Thank you to all who attended the Festive Light Switch On and Late Night Shopping Evening in Cowes on 16 November. We were entertained by Lanesend Primary School’s choir, performing a number of festive songs before the Mayor led the countdown to turning the lights on.Cowes’ retailers did us proud, with many opening their doors until 8pm, enticing shoppers in with seasonal treats, including mince pies, stollen and mulled wine.
Retailers will be holding a second late night shopping evening on Thursday 7 December, 5pm – 8pm. Please put the date in your diary and support our local businesses. There will be FREE parking in Cross Street car park on Thursday 7 December between 4pm – 9pm. Special thanks to the staff and children from Lanesend Primary School.
The Mayor made a donation on behalf of Cowes Town Council to the School for their Dance Live 2024 entry.

LARGE ATTENDANCE NUMBERS AT COWES WAR MEMORIAL FOR REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY – The Parade marched to Cowes War Memorial in Northwood Park, Cowes as crowds lined the route. Reverend Elizabeth Moxley led a memorial service, attended by local dignitaries and representatives of our Armed Forces and emergency services. The wreath laying was led by Colonel Carron Snagge, Deputy Lieutenant, IW Councillor Lora Peacey Wilcox and Deputy Mayor of Cowes, Councillor Stuart Ellis. A two minutes’ silence was observed. Following the memorial service, a service of remembrance was held in St Mary’s Church, after which the Parade reformed to march through the town to The Parade for a march past the Deputy Mayor and Parade inspection.

Remembrance Sunday provides the opportunity for us to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our country and Commonwealth. We remember the Armed Forces and the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

MERCHANT NAVY DAY – 3 SEPTEMBER 2023 – We supported #MerchantNavyDay by flying the #RedEnsign from our flagpole in Francki Place, Cowes on Sunday 3 September. We flew the Red Ensign to honour the brave men & women who kept the UK afloat during both World Wars & celebrate modern-day Merchant Navy #seafarers who play a vital role in transporting over 95% of the UK’s trade.

DEPUTY MAYOR WELCOMES ROYAL NAVY TO COWES TOWN COUNCIL – Deputy Mayor of Cowes, Councillor Stuart Ellis welcomed Lieutenant Commander Hugo Floyer RN, the Commanding Officer of Naval Guardship HMS TYNE, at the Town Council’s office on Tuesday 1 August, accompanied by Lieutenant Commander Ryan Greig RN of HMS Tyne and Andy Swain, Deputy to the Naval Regional Commander in London and Eastern England (NRC L&EE).

MAYOR OPENS NEW WOODLAND WALK IN COWES – The first official engagement for the Mayor was opening the Jubilee Woodland Walk in Moorgreen Road. Cowes Town Council worked in partnership with Moorgreen Road Allotment Society, Cowes Baptist Church and Sovereign Housing by providing financial assistance to enable tree management works to remove invasive species, encouraging native trees and woodland flowers to flourish. Our thanks to Pete Fellows for co-ordinating this project on behalf of Moorgreen Road Allotment Society, and for his personal hard work and dedication, without which the project wouldn’t have come to fruition.NEW MURAL FOR COWES – Councillors and Southern Water were pleased to officially unveil a new mural depicting ‘Secrets of the Solent’ on the west facing side of the Cabin on the Green, opposite Mornington Road on Cowes esplanade. Cowes Town Council is delighted to have worked in partnership with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust (HIWWT) and Southern Water to secure Cowes as a location for one of six new murals. The murals, which consist of six underwater scenes, painted and inked onto boards of marine plywood, when pieced together, form a giant 24ft long and 16ft high map of the Solent, showcasing local species including thresher sharks, undulate rays, seahorses and mantis shrimp. HIWWT commissioned Southampton-based artist and illustrator, Hannah Horn, to create a series of large, interlocking artworks that celebrate the Solent’s extraordinary marine life. As part of their National Lottery supported project, Secrets of the Solent, which works to celebrate and raise awareness of Solent’s protected species and habitats. The HIWWT hopes the murals will become landmarks in their locations and inspire viewers to take an interest in the area’s diverse marine environment, including its internationally important seagrass meadows, chalk reefs and rocky sponge gardens.

COWES FESTIVE LIGHTS SWITCH ON – The town’s Festive Lighting Switching On Ceremony took place on Thursday 24th November. We were honored that the High Sheriff, Kay Marriott, pressed the button to turn the lights on. Special thanks to the pupils (and staff) of Lanesend Primary School, who entertained the crowd with Christmas carols and songs. We were very thankful that the day’s wet and windy weather conditions subsided enough for us all the remain dry for the outdoor event. Thank you to everyone involved.
The new lights on the Christmas Tree in Francki Place are a welcome addition to this year’s festive season.

MARYLAND COMMEMORATION – On 22nd November AD 1633 Leonard Calvert brother of Cecil Calvert, Baron of Baltimore, with his co-adventurers, set sail from Cowes, Isle of Wight in the Ark and the Dove to establish in America the Palatinate of Maryland, under a charter granted by the King of England, which conferred upon the people of Maryland all the Rights of Englishmen, to be theirs in perpetuity – Rights which the people of Maryland have ever cherished as their greatest, most valued heritage. We are flying the Maryland flag today (22 November) from our flagpole at Francki Place in commemoration of those who set sail from Cowes on 22nd November 1633.

COWES REMEMBRANCE DAY – It was lovely to see such a large crowd at Cowes’ Remembrance Service at the war memorial yesterday, led by Rev. Elizabeth Moxley. The parade marched to the war memorial from Park Road. Wreath laying was led by Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Carron Snagge OBE DL, followed by the Leader of the IW Council Cllr Lora Peacey Wilcox, Mayor of Cowes Cllr Paul Bertie. A remembrance service followed in St Mary’s Church, after which the parade marched to Cowes Parade through the High Street for a salute and inspection by Col. Snagge, accompanied by the Mayor of Cowes and Rev. Moxley. Thank you to all those who took part in the parade and service. Weren’t the Pipers fantastic, a real treat for the ears!

We would like to welcome the Commander and crew of HMS Severn to Cowes and hope they enjoy visiting for Cowes Week 2022.
PLATINUM JUBILEE – Thank you to all who supported the Beacon Lighting and Jubilee Picnic in the Park. What a fantastic bank holiday weekend of events locally and nationally were organised.
80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEFENCE OF COWES AND EAST COWES – Events took place in Cowes and East Cowes over the period 4 – 8 May commemorating and celebrating the Defence of Cowes by the ORP Blyskawica on 4 / 5 May 1942. Polish Warship ORP Wodnik moored at Trinity Buoy for the duration of the commemorations. The closing ceremony on Cowes Bandstand concluded 5 days of events in both towns. We hope residents and visitors enjoyed the town festooned with bright flags and banners.

COWES, GURNARD AND NORTHWOOD LOCAL WALKING AND CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN (LCWIP) – We are delighted to be working in partnership with Gurnard and Northwood Parish Councils and commissioned People Powered CIC to produce a LCWIP for our area, with 50% match-funding from the IW Council using the grant funding from the government’s Department for Transport.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2021 – There was a fantastic turnout for the Remembrance Day parade and service in Cowes on 14th November. Thank you to all those who took part in the parade and those who attended to support the event. We welcomed double Olympic Gold Medalist Shirley Robertson OBE DL who led the wreath laying and read out a message from the Queen. Mayor of Cowes, Paul Bertie, and Reverend Andrew Poppe took the Parade salute and were invited to inspect the groups.
ROYAL NAVY GUARD SHIP SUPPORTS COWES WEEK – Councillor Paul Bertie, Mayor of Cowes, welcomed Lieutenant Commander Samuel Stephens, Royal Navy Commanding Officer of HMS Ledbury to Cowes. HMS Ledbury is moored on the Trinity Buoy near the entrance to Cowes Harbour and has been provided by the Royal Navy as Guard Ship for Cowes Week.

NEW TOWN MAPS COMPLETED – The Town Council has completed its redesign of the town map. The new maps are on display throughout the town in our display cases. We hope visitors and residents find the new map interesting, informative and an attractive addition to the town.

Mayor of Cowes, Lora Peacey Wilcox commemorated the 75th anniversary of VJ Day – the day World War Two ended with Japan’s surrender – at the War Memorial in Northwood Park. A minute’s silence was held at 11am, followed by the singing of the Exhortation by Vanessa Slade, representing Holy Trinity Church, Cowes.
ARMED FORCES DAY COMMEMORATIONS – Mayor of Cowes, Lora Peacey Wilcox, was in Francki Place on Monday 22 June to raise the Armed Forces Day flag. Armed Forces Day was on 27 June 2020.

Light Up A Life Christmas Carol Service – Our annual Carol Service in aid of Mountbatten Isle of Wight was held on Thursday 5th December 2019 in Cowes Methodist Church. Mayor of Cowes, Cllr Lora Peacey Wilcox, presented a cheque on behalf of the people of Cowes to Rebecca McGregor, Managing Director of Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
Remembrance Sunday – A large crowd attended at the War Memorial in Northwood Park on Sunday 10 November 2019. The service was led by Reverend Andrew Poppe in front of the War Memorial. A service of remembrance followed in St Mary’s Church before the Parade marched to Cowes Parade where they saluted the Mayor of Cowes.
FESTIVE LIGHTING SWITCH ON EVENT – Shirley Robertson OBE, double Olympic gold medallist, speaker and broadcaster switched on of the town’s Festive Lighting on Thursday 28th November 2019.
THE BIG LUNCH 2019 – The Town Council was pleased to support The Big Lunch 2019 held at Northwood House and Park on Sunday 3rd June. The lovely weather brought a large number of visitors to the event with their picnic lunches. It was great to see so many people enjoying the entertainment and activities on offer. Councillors and the Clerks were on hand throughout the event to answer any questions from members of the public.
WATCH HOUSE SHELTER RE-OPENS – The Watch House Shelter, Cowes, has been restored and reopened to the public. The restoration was jointly funded by the Isle of Wight Council and Cowes Town Council, working in partnership with local firm Trevor Jones Contracting who offered to repair and refurbish the site at cost price to save the much-loved landmark. The Town Council are delighted that this historic structure has been restored for the benefit of the residents and visitors to Cowes.

SPRING CLEAN AT NORTHWOOD RECREATION GROUND – The Town Council’s Great British Spring Clean event took place on Wednesday 3 April at Northwood Recreation Ground. It was a bright sunny day and the Recreation Ground looked very tidy with freshly cut grass and hedges. We would like to say a big thank you and well done to those who volunteered their time to litter pick the Recreation Ground.

Light Up A Life Christmas Carol Service – Our annual Carol Service in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice took place on Thursday 6th December 2018 in Cowes Methodist Church, Birmingham Road, Cowes. The evening saw a packed audience who were in fine voice. Mayor of Cowes, Councillor Paul Fuller, presented a donation to Mr Michael Edmunds, Finance Director of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, on behalf of the Town Council and residents of Cowes.

tive Lighting Switching On Ceremony – The town’s Festive Lighting Switching On Ceremony took place on Saturday 17th November 2018. The lights run from Birmingham Road, through the High Street and Bath Road to the Parade. This year we were delighted to welcome ‘Queen Victoria’ as our VIP to turn the lights on. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in making this event happen, especially our ‘Queen Victoria’ – Susan O’Halloran, Mr Board for providing the beautiful Rolls Royce which transported our VIP through the town, and also to Cowes Carnival for bringing their very festive float into the town, along with Christmas music and Santa’s elves! Thank you everyone!
Remembrance Sunday 2018 – Remembrance Sunday marked the 100th anniversary since the end of the First World War. A large crowd attended at the War Memorial in Northwood Park. 147 members of the public were invited by Reverend Andrew Poppe to be part of the service and place 147 wooden crosses in front of the War Memorial to represent the lives lost from Cowes in the First World War. Thank you to all those who took part. A service of remembrance followed in St Mary’s Church before the Parade marched to Cowes Parade where they saluted the Mayor of Cowes.

The Mayor and representatives from Cowes Town Council attended a service to commemorate the start of WW1 at the War Memorial, Northwood Park on Saturday 4 August 2018.
Reverend Poppe delivered the service followed by a Town Council wreath being laid at the War Memorial.
Cowes welcomes Royal visitor
A crowd of well-wishers, including our own Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, Cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox, welcomed Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall to Cowes this lunchtime (24 July) to name the latest addition to the Red Jet fleet, “Red Jet 7”. The official naming ceremony took place on Trinity Landing. Pupils from local primary schools welcomed the Duchess of Cornwall to a very warm and sunny Cowes.

The Town Council was pleased to support Commonwealth Day by flying the Commonwealth Flag at our flagpole in Francki Place, Cowes from 12 – 13 March 2018.
LIGHTS OF LOVE CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE 2017

FESTIVE LIGHTING 2017
The town’s festive lights were switched on by Mr Alan Titchmarsh MBE VMH DL on Saturday, 18th November, in Cowes High Street. There was a great turnout to see the lights turned on. We would like to say a special thank you to Alan and his wife Alison, and to everyone who attended.
The Town Council have extended the static gym equipment sited at Northwood Recreation Ground. Six pieces of mobile gym equipment, which have been selected to give users the opportunity to exercise different parts of the body, have been added to the existing outdoor gym. The gym is already proving to be a very popular addition to this well-used recreational area. We hope members of the public will enjoy using the new equipment.
Former Mayor of Cowes, Mr Geoff Banks BEM, performed the official opening of the Shelter on Saturday 1 July 2017 in front of a small crowd of Councillors, guests and members of the public.
